IKI goes Out in the North

LAVA is one month and a week old today, and what better way to celebrate than to share a video we made the day after the release?

On the 11th of November we went with the guys from Out in the North, to beautiful Lake Bagsværd in the outskirts of Copenhagen, where we improvised this song. We hope you enjoy!

Fun fact: Every sweater in this video is owned by our reigning second hand-shopping champion, Anna. Another fun fact: Guro’s glasses are missing one arm. Anything can indeed happen.

And stay tuned. We have two more videos lined up for release in the new year. Feel free to start guessing which Lava songs will be involved!

Goodness gracious, so much have happened since the last time we wrote in here! The last week, in particular, has been a completely crazy one.

Not only did we go to Italy for the first time, playing a little mini-tour in the Milano-area! And not only did we finish up Danish Vibes with a huge showcase at the Mojo Club in Hamburg, in front of a great crowd of people! And not only did we record two new music videos in one week! Because most importantly of all: LAVA is finally out!!

Lava cover

We are thrilled and so happy that it’s finally released, and the whole thing was celebrated with an unforgettable concert at the beautiful Dome of Visions in Copenhagen, together with Hilmar Jensson (who also plays on the record), and with visuals by Suzy Attah Mikkelsen.

Lava has been a long time coming, but it’s been a labour of love.

Until next time,

IKI goes to BeNeLux

We’re one concert and one day away from finishing up our little BeNeLux trip, and we’re sure, without a doubt, that BeNeLux is a great place for an IKIer to be. So many inspiring cities, so many nice people, such an amazing atmosphere to be a part of!

And of course, it’s been a pleasure traveling around with our new favorite group of guys, The KutiMangoes (you should check them out, they’re great).

We started out in Utrecht, playing at Cloud Nine in TivoliVredenburg, where we also got an iron and ironing board backstage. It doesn’t take much to win our hearts.

We continued on to Brussels the next day, playing at Belgium’s old radio house, Flagey, in Studio 1. It’s one of the most beautiful scenes we’ve played on, with an audience who were truly present all the way through.

Yesterday we spent the day in Rotterdam, having the day off after doing a workshop at our own Johanna’s old conservatory, Codarts. It’s always fun to share vocal improvisation with other singers. You always find a new point of view that you haven’t thought of before. We also managed to catch a show with our co-Danish Delight-ers, The Cabin Project and Kira Skov.

Right now we’re backstage at the venue De Oosterpoort in Groningen waiting for sound checking. We’re looking forward to the last show of the tour, especially because we’re having a special guest singing with us.

Until next time
Love from IKI

Summer, festivals and LAVA

It’s been a while since we wrote in our diary, and a lot has happened since!

We’ve had a fantastic summer where we performed nothing less that six times during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2014. It was very exiting and enjoyably intense, and a great way of getting in good stage-shape. 🙂

We had the opportunity of working with some great people: The saxophone player Mia Dyberg, who is one of the instrumentalists who really understands IKI’s sound and brings a new element to it. Also, we sang with the beautiful and talented folk singer Jullie Hjetland. And last but not least, we had a performance together with the danish writer Nicolaj Stochholm who just finished his collection of erotic(!) poems. It was an amazing experience to accompany his poetry, and the contrast between his and our voices worked very well, we think. So stay tuned – This cooperation is definitely going to happen again!

In august we had a lovely trip to the north of Norway (and when we say north, we mean it): Midnight sun and 10 degrees celcius! Varangerfestivalen was a blast. Not only did we get to do a workshop with young local singers and play a concert in Vadsø church, we also went sightseeing and king crab fishing in the middle of the night. With us on stage we had the norwegian singer Natalie Sandtorv, who inspired us all with her unique improvising language.

Remember some time ago, when we made a crowdfunding campaign? We finally finished the producing, mastering and and the artwork for our second album which is going to be named “Lava”.

Berlin, Greifswald, music video & photo shoot!

A week ago we had our very first Germany experience and we had a blast!

The entire trip started at 5:20 in the morning at Copenhagen Airport, where we also met up with the guys from our very own Johanna’s band. Safe to say, there was a lot of coffee involved. From there we took the train through beautiful Germany and ended up in Greifswald, where we played @ Nordischer Klang Festival in the old theatre in town. We were happy to be joined on stage by the amazing singer Anni Elif Egecioglu (from Elifantree) from Sweden. This is the first concert IKI’s had where we represented all the Nordic countries – perfect for the Nordischer Klang Festival! And the audience was easily one of the greatest we’ve ever had. Engaged, listening and open.

After Greifswald we went to Berlin, where Kamilla has been living ’till recently, so we had a personal tour guide to show as all the nice places to eat, shop and hang out. We probably ate enough Asian cuisine to last us a year. We stayed in the beautiful house of the Icelandic ambassador, which was a pleasure all the way through. Considering how close we feel to Iceland it felt a little bit like home. We also saw some of Berlin’s jazzy nightlife, since our trip ended up overlapping the XJazz Festival. A few of us caught the Icelandic band ADHD’s concert on Thursday, and loved every second of it.

Thursday we made some spontaneous music videos in different urban settings in Berlin and had a small photo shoot, we can’t wait to see and show you the result! We can reveal that […]

We’re going to Norway (and Germany)!

We’re setting a new personal record this summer, playing our northernmost concert, ever! In other words, we’re going to Vadsø in Finnmark, to play at Varangerfestivalen in August. Norway continues to be one of our favourite places to play, so we’re so excited to go back and discover the northern part!

And in other fun news the Danish Vibes website is live and the date for the Danish Vibes showcase, at Mojo in Hamburg, has been set for 13th of November.

But before that we’re going to the festival Nordischer Klang in Greifswald, DE! Our concert will be on the 7th of May. Hope to see you there!

Danish Vibes: IKI’s going to Germany

We’ve got some exciting news here in IKI land, that we’ve been looking forward to sharing with you! IKI has been chosen to join Danish Vibes!

Danish Vibes is a joint investment from the Danish Arts Council, World Music Denmark and JazzDanmark to give four bands a launching pad to move onto the German market. We’ve wanted to focus on Germany for a long time now, so to be able to join Danish Vibes is a thrill for us. You can read more about Danish Vibes here (DK) or here (EN). We’ve already got a few things lining up, so watch this space.

It seems like this will be an international year for us. And while we wait for other news to be announced take a look at this video from one of our concerts in Iceland, which JazzDanmark posted in their article and which made this IKI-girl nostalgic.
